Hosts

ICLEI Canada

ICLEI Canada is thrilled to be hosting the 13th Livable Cities Forum this year. This prominent event has been bringing together Canadian municipal practitioners and local leaders to explore how to build livable cities since 2011.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is a global network of more than 2,500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. Active in 125+ countries, we influence sustainability policy and drive local action for low emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient, and circular development. Our Members and team of experts work together through peer exchange, partnerships, and capacity building to create systemic change for urban sustainability. ICLEI Canada’s work happens across Turtle Island which has traditionally been and is home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples since time immemorial. We endeavour to listen to and learn from Indigenous Peoples on an ongoing basis in the process of our work.

We’re thrilled to return to Halifax for the 2025 Livable Cities Forum. The region of Halifax and Atlantic Canada as a whole continuously demonstrate bold, community-driven leadership on climate. The East Coast is home to many innovative municipal projects, powerful partnerships, and inspiring examples of resilience. The Halifax region in particular is a hub of local action where climate ambition meets collaboration and is supported by political leaders. We’re looking forward to learning from the region and building new relationships while strengthening existing ones.

Halifax Regional Municipality

Halifax is thrilled to once again be co-hosting the Livable Cities Forum, bringing this crucial event in local government calendars back to our shores.

The Halifax Regional Municipality is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq People. We acknowledge the Peace and Friendship Treaties signed in this Territory and recognize that we are all Treaty People. Situated on Canada’s Atlantic coast, Halifax is a vibrant, growing city with nature at our doorstep and a deep connection to the land and water.

Since declaring a climate emergency in 2019, Halifax has made significant progress in advancing local climate action. In June 2020, just months into the global pandemic, the Regional Council unanimously adopted HalifACT, an ambitious climate plan that positions Halifax as a national leader in climate adaptation and mitigation. With HalifACT, for which the ACT is short for “Acting on Climate Together”, Halifax continues to demonstrate that bold, collective action is not only possible but essential.

The level of effort and timelines required to face climate change are ambitious and unprecedented. Given the urgency of the issue, we need new approaches that allow us to work collaboratively with multiple partners, try out and refine ideas with nimbleness, and easily track progress. Halifax is testing and exploring approaches to enable such collaboration, and are thrilled to convene local governments at LCF 2025 to together expand our vision for how to effectively act on climate together.

CLIMAtlantic

CLIMAtlantic facilitates access to regionally relevant climate information and supports its effective use in planning and decision making for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Our mission is driven by the need for accessible, reliable, actionable climate information to address climate-related risks and support adaptation. We are also user-driven, focusing on the needs of Indigenous communities, academia, provincial governments, municipalities, local service districts, non-profits, industry, and land-owners. CLIMAtlantic works with all regional and local groups to ensure there is a strong network of collaboration, and that data and tools are easily accessible.

Climate change adaptation has made significant headway across communities in Canada, but new risks and challenges continue to emerge. To avoid reducing climate risks at the expense of other types of risk (e.g., social, environmental), adaptation must continue to evolve to remain impactful and relevant. The Livable Cities Forum brings together different perspectives, practices, priorities, and experiences, creating a space where local leaders can collectively navigate what meaningful climate action could look like; identify new pathways forward; and connect over a shared passion for thriving communities. CLIMAtlantic is looking forward to participating in these discussions, sharing our resources and network, and helping communities meet their adaptation needs.

Evergreen

Evergreen is a national charity dedicated to transforming public spaces in cities to create a healthier future for people and our planet. We know that green and inclusive public spaces are multi-solving; they can improve climate resilience, health and wellbeing, economic development, and community cohesion. That’s why, for over 30 years, we have worked with communities across Canada on over 6,000 public space projects, creating parks, school grounds, and community hubs that are bursting with life.

We’re witnessing the devastating impacts of climate change worldwide, and across Canada — extreme heat, forest fires and devastating floods, among them. The Livable Cities Forum is a chance to engage with a community of dedicated professionals to take tangible action to adapt to our changing climate. As an organization committed to creating more inclusive and sustainable public spaces, we know that our trails, parks and waterfronts can be part of the solution — not only as climate-ready landscapes, but as hubs for connection, wellbeing and local economic development. Evergreen is a proud partner of the 2025 Livable Cities Forum. We’re looking forward to learning together and sharing our expertise and resources to create more resilient communities across Canada.

We are honoured to be part of the 2025 Livable Cities Forum. The conference’s focus on climate action and sustainable communities deeply resonates with the values of the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre. The new Wije’winen Centre is not only a gathering place for our urban Indigenous community, but also a living, physical representation of Reconciliation.
